I have always felt difficulty in embracing a life philosophy which revolves around the pursuit of “happiness.” The periods in my life which were most uncomfortable, most distressing, and most challenging served as necessary crises which led to pronounced transformation and self-realization. Indeed, I enjoy being content, I prefer the security of a stable life, I conduct myself with discipline, planning, and defense mechanisms in order to avoid pain, risk, and loss. This is an oversimplification. In certainty, there is work involved with becoming a higher version of ourselves, of finding appreciation and beauty in all this is around us. I would argue that happiness should never be a destination or viewed as the motivation for achievement.
